We could all use some good news! We could all use something to get excited about!
I realized that many people are receiving bad news at every turn and if it isn't personally bad it is a sad story about someone else. I have made it my mission in the next month to share as much good news as I can. Everyday I am seeking to tell everyone I interact with at least one good thing during the course of our interaction. I think this is powerful for those giving the news and for those receiving.

Nation's Two Leading Technology Groups Join Forces
The Washington, DC-based AeA (formerly the American Electronics Association) and the Arlington, VA-based Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) joined forces on January 1 to create The Technology Association of America.
The move is intended to give a stronger voice for the technology industry by bringing together the largest number of tech companies throughout the United States.
AeA President and CEO Christopher Hansen and ITAA President and CEO Phil Bond will share leadership of the new group. Hansen will be CEO focused on running the organization, while Bond will be President and handle public policy, lobbying and communications.
More Clout in Washington
"For all of its impact on everyday life, the technology industry has had insufficient clout in Washington and the state capitals -- until now," says ITAA Chairman Hank Steininger, a managing partner at Grant Thornton. "Together, our associations will become the clear leader, continuing a chain of consolidation that ITAA began in January."
"With the onset of a new year, we are faced with many obstacles and opportunities," says AeA Chairman Peter J. Boni, President and CEO of Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. "The consolidation of these two great associations offers the technology industry a strong voice on Capitol Hill and extends the new Administration a united partner to foster innovation and address the challenges ahead."
The new organization, representing approximately 2,000 member companies, will advocate on technology issues in state capitals across the country and provide programs in every industry center.
AeA's extensive network of regional councils across the U.S., combined with ITAA's alliances with over 16,000 companies through 40 regional associations with the Technology Councils of North America (TECNA), will provide an unrivaled national presence.
A United Federal Lobbying Operation
The two associations will bring that network to Washington through a united federal lobbying operation. An exclusive membership in the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) -- a network of 69 technology associations in countries around the world -- and offices in Beijing and Brussels will round out the Technology Association of America's robust capability for the technology industry at large.
AeA, the nation's largest technology trade association representing all segments of the high-tech industry, was dedicated to helping our members' top line and bottom line. It did this in partnership with our small, medium, and large member companies by lobbying governments at the state, federal, and international levels, providing access to capital and business opportunities, and offering select business services and networking programs.
The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) was the premier IT and electronics industry association working to maintain America's role as the world's innovation headquarters. ITAA provided leadership in market research, standards development, business development, networking and public policy advocacy to some 350 corporate members doing business in the public and commercial sector markets. These members range from the smallest start-ups to industry leaders offering Internet, software, services and hardware solutions.
I usually shy away from the oh so obvious of topics like what are you thankful for at Thanksgiving, however this year I felt that it was a pertinent subject. In a year where many have watched their 401Ks evaporate and many hardships emerge it is easy to complain. It is difficult to have a conversation about national affairs, global affairs without falling into all that has gone wrong and all that could be better. This has had its effects from a career perspective for many. There are those who have been laid off, those who fear being laid off and those who worry over how their company might fair as the economic crisis continues to unfold.
And I am among the many who have questioned what might happen next? How bad can it get? --But I also logically realize that in every valley there is opportunity if you are willing to be opportunistic and on the other side of every downward cycle is prosperity. I am ready and waiting to embrace it. So I have listed below the things I am professionally thankful for this year:
I am thankful for my relationships – What I have realized is that to spite whatever may happen I have a strong network of people that I have spend years building relationships with. I am glad to be here for them when they need it and grateful that I know I can rely on them when I need it. There are few things more precious professionally.
I am thankful to live in the land of opportunity – Hundreds of years later we still live in the land of opportunity. Regardless of lost jobs, changing industries, changing technologies –we have the opportunity to become anything or to transform into anything we are willing to put the effort in to get. It may not be easy, it may take time, but the opportunities are out there. We are not chained to a company or a profession, which leads me to the next thing I am thankful for.
I am thankful to have the power of choice – We are a powerful nation of people and of professionals. Individually we each have ultimate power and that is the power to choose. Professionally and personally we are in a position to shape our lives and in the hardest times, in the best times we always have the power to change direction. It can be frightening because we are in charge and it falls to us. When we look back over our lives and look into the future we have everything we need…we have the ability to choose.
I am thankful for resiliency – In hard times we learn the most. We get stronger, smarter, faster, better because we have to. I look back at my career and it wasn’t the times of ease that I dug deep and found my best game…it was in the times it was needed and demanded. We talk a lot about career growth and personal development there is no better time to do it then now. It is when we are challenged we learn what we are made of. It is when it is when greatness is really needed that it can be realized. And when we grow, when we rise to the challenge, when we wade through the hard times we realize we are much more resilient than we gave ourselves credit for.
